What is a PAR and why do I need a PAR meter to read it:

PAR stands for "Photo- synthetically Active Rad- iation". PAR is a classification of light(Micro Einsteins) also known as Micro Moles per second per square meter.

PAR meters measure the photons in the usable spectrum for photosynthesis in the range of 400-700 nano meters. The 400-700nm is the optimal wavelength/color range for photosynthesis to occur.

PAR meters count the Photons striking a surface per unit of time. Thus, measurements can be made and recorded for future use.

We know that 200-300 micro moles is sufficient for most SPS corals. I would recommend closer to 300 Micro Moles for SPS corals.

Corals can and many will adapt to various PAR numbers. IT's very nice though to get numbers on SPS corals growing rapidly and doing very well in a certain location in the tank. Mapping these areas is very nice and other hobbyists can benefit from exact PAR numbers. Colors on various corals can be kept much closer from tank to tank with reference PAR numbers.

Global is the first to offer affordable quantum meter rental to hobbyists all over the USA! We offer the latest in technology for you to rent and maximize coral placement, bulb selection, and energy savings!

Features and uses for your animals benefit:

1. Coral placement has always been guesstimating. Then over weeks or even months moving the animals to different locations/heights in the tank. By using a PAR meter, you can record the various levels of PAR and map where different PAR numbers exist throughout the tank and change with various depths in the tank. A clear and visually concise map will now exist for you! No more guessing!

2. Testing different bulbs and wattages to fine tune your lighting needs. No more wasting electricity or guessing which bulbs are best for your application.

DO YOU REALLY NEED A NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM? Test and see what PAR you are currently getting from your existing set up before making that big step, IF YOU REALLY NEED TO!

3. Checking and recording old bulbs, then replacing and recording PAR from new bulbs. Recording this will give you a concise time span on your bulbs life.

The Apogee Quantum PAR meter is built here in the USA and is extremely accurate. The unit is easy to use and will come with directions.

The meter comes with both Data Recording capability and sun/electric bulb calibration. Each meter can store up to 99 manually recorder measurements. In automatic mode, measurements are made every 30 seconds and averages stored every 30 minutes.

These meters feature the submersable blue lens for improved spectral response along with a cosine-corrected head. Self cleaning characteristics and long term stability are among many other features.
